Award - winning team website ideas!
« on: May 13, 2008, 05:16:21 PM »

Hey,
Please post a list of some of the cool features, interesting/useful content, or good layouts that some of the Website Award winning teams had from this past year.  You can find out who won the website award by going to http://usfirst.org/community/frc/regionalevents.aspx?id=430 and looking at who won the award at each regional. There were 40ish regionals, so however many of you there are please divide them up evenly.
Each person involved should list at least 5 ideas from each award winning website.  This should help fuel our brainstorm session on what WE want to implement on our own web site for next year :)

I did research 7 award winners

FIRST Championship   http://www.mvrt.com    115
Hawaii                            http://www.team597.net    597
New York City                http://www.team1635.org    1635
microsoft seattle       http://www.trobotics.ca/   1346
Silicon Valley                   http://www.mvrt.com    115
Las Vegas                   http://team1527.xlx2.com    1527
Boston                            http://www.fairportfirst.com/    576

and one don't working at the moment of this writing- 1527
and most are decent but only two stand out, 115, who won Silicon Valley and Championship and 1346 won Seattle
1346 is flashy, I don't know if you wanted to do that, it seem a lot work
but I really recommend see 115, they has a lot info in there, lot picture in-house, lot video in-house host, also has design process showcase there for everyone to see, has lot acrtiles, stories, nice and long team info and it is tightly organized and it uses AJAX tabs to store all info. it is really nice website.

Simon said, I COMMAND YOU TO BE A CLONE LIKE TEAM 115, because I won't there next year >:( ;D

Detroit Regional - Website winner Team 245 "Adambots"  Rochester Hills, MIhttp://www.adambots.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

Bright yellow background really catches your eye.
Big team photo plus photo banner and photo buttons - very visual.

Connecticut Regional - Website winner:Team 177 -South Windsor CT

No pictures at all on the front page, but a very clean, easy to read layout.
The team crest in the corner is a classy touch.
Drill down to the CADD page.  A great rendering of their bot on that page. Wicked-looking.

Peachtree Regional- Team 34

  • A LOT of information about their community sevice, and it gives great pictures with every event they contributed to.. like reading to kids, etc.
  • it was very organized, like with links at the top of the page to view team members and sponsors, etc
  • home page is sparse but it has a good team picture and a description of this year's game
  • it also has links about the regional events they were in, their robot, community outreach and team members which make it very interactive

Richmond, VA Regional- Team 359

  • home page has a good team picture, and a cool and catchy background
  • info on the regionals and chamnpionship they were in with pictures with Dean Kamen  :o
  • there are very accessable links to their sponsors at the top of the page
  • they have pictures that go along with almost every link you can click which is nice because they make it easy for you to see what you are about to see
  • overall, it had a nice background and lots of pictures so you felt like you personally knew the team... it also had a lot of information about everything they have done to help the community

these are just the ones i have done tonight... i will get back to you with the other regionals i did

2370

The website is very cool looking with the pictures.
The website is very easy to navigate because it doesn't have any confusing dropdowns.
They have a CC liscense at the bottom of their website.
There is a Google Calander box informing you about meetings.

16

Creepy pictures at the top of some pages.

1089

Because of how the website was layed out, there isn't much room left for content.
It has a picture viewer at the top but only scrolls through 3 pictures.
There are a few buttons on the top and several more links on the side so navigation can get confusing.
The sponsors are listed on the side.

1540

The website had quite a bit of content.
There are useful resources on the website.
Most URLs actually mean something.
Lots of pictures.

2062

Marquee (nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!)
Opening page (CLick here to enter site!)
Urls mean something!
Lots of links along the side.
Funny engineering quotes on the page.

Israel Regional Team 1657

Links to other "friend", partner, nearby teams.
Prominent links and bios of sponsors
Good front layout for regular updates (even though they don't do that....)
Neutral, but interesting background colors (metallic grays) - backgrounds are very clean but still interesting.

Greater Toronto Regional - Team 378 Circuit Stompershttp://www.delphicircuitstompers.com/
Good:
  • Drilldown menu system - single main links on top, go to sublinks on side for main categories-clean
  • 'Student of the day' - random bio pull from the bio page, maybe instead 'photo of the day'? - could integrate this with the Flash control for 'latest images'
  • Explicit list with detail about demos, events, past rosters of team members
  • Sponsors page - graphics, links, and address/contact/blurb
  • Regional-specific page-they didn't have info, but should be done more like MOE's
  • Index page  - big header to start, shrinks to reasonable size for other pages

Additional info about NYC regional - 1635 http://team1635.org/
Good:
  • Shaded/graphic content boxes on the side-Scrolling content box not bad if it was faster and icons were smaller
  • Detailed section on what FIRST is about- definitely important!!-although the brute copy/paste from FIRST website might be a little much
[/b]
  • Detailed info on robot specs and mechanisms
  • Safety section - we got the award,
  • Well laid out, but nothing else that really stands out
Bad:
  • Firefox works poorly or not at all for some content
  • Some content boxes are hard to read - sponsors page

Looks like I can't be kept from work either ^^;;

UC Davis Regional [Sacremento] - Team #115

Overall this site works a little well, but there's something weird with the designy, artsy stuff. It's... not people friendly when it comes to the colors...

  • So much information I wasn't exactly sure where to start and end, but informative and friendly.
  • Their menu was easy enough to figure out, but I have a feeling if I took it to my grandma (and isn't that who we want to see it anyways) she might have a small issue.
  • Cute countdown at the top, left hand corner. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it until I clicked back and forth to the site and here a few times.
  • From an artsy point of view, there's a little issue with the colors. It might be their team colors, but they could mute them a little. Again with poor Grandma....

Waterloo - Team #1114

Overall, this website is definitely deserving of this award. It's clean and friendly, so there aren't a lot of nitpicks.

  • Good information, except on one or two pages, where it wasn't updated.
  • Big links on the left for friends and family to look at. The layout is clean enough.
  • As for the artsy standpoint? The buttons on the left clash with the stuff everywhere else. If those were different colors, or even like... different shades of red, then it'd be a little better.

West Michigan - Team #234

Totally totally deserves the award. It's clean, informative, and fun ^^

  • It's easy to navigate in. With 74 proud grandmas sponsoring the team, it has to be easy, right?
  • Drop down menus are usually something I'm a bit leery about, but this page seems to have it working flawlessly.
  • They have little pictures for the mentors and the students!!!!!
  • The only qualm I've got, functionality wise, is that it has a little too much flash. It doesn't use it on every page, but it sure seems like it... and there are still people out there with slow loading speeds, I know it!
  • Design wise, it's an awesome site, with blue and white, and a friendly typeface to match. I'm not sure I'm all that fond of that much white space, or that really large banner at the top, but it doesn't seem to bother it all that much.

Boston Regional - Team #578

AHHH! MY EYES!

  • Well, it's informative... slightly... Not as much as some of the other winning sites I've seen, but informative enough to work...
  • Their dropdown menus hurt... both visually and navigationally.
  • Well, to be honest? I'm not sure I like the site all that much... *shrugs* It's not all that nice to look at, and they could use a little bit more information.
  • Blue. Hurt. Eyes. Ow. No more need be said.
